For a fictional character, James T. Kirk has one of the most fully developed back stories of any television show protagonist. In the official storyline from the original Star Trek television series, he was born and raised in Riverside, Iowa. Canadian actor William Shatner initially played Kirk on television after Jack Lord’s demands to play him were considered too steep.
Shatner did not expect the show to succeed, but ended up playing the captain for over 40 years. In 2009, Chris Pine took over the portrayal of Kirk, with Shatner’s blessing.
